Synopsis[]
The storyline begins normally with Neku waking up on the Scramble Crossing. After discovering his player pin and scanning the thoughts of the people on the street, he drops it, drawing the attention of Shiki Misaki. After discovering a fellow player, Shiki demands that Neku makes a pact with her, and after begrudgingly accepting, they battle the Frog Noise.
After defeating the noise, and having a "sudden interaction" with Mr. Mew, Shiki introduces herself and explains the basic premise of the Reapers game. Shocked and enraged by the prospect, Neku runs off.
The scene then shifts to a meeting between Sho Minamimoto, Megumi Katanji, and Konishi arguing over Minamimoto's tardiness and ends with Megumi in tears after being called "Megs." We are then introduced to the first game master, Higashizawa, who says that he issued instructions to all the reapers and the area and is curious to how many players will get squeezed out.
The scene switches back again to Neku and an irritated Shiki after catching up to him within the 104 building area. Neku then collides with a barrier, giving him a bloody nose and waking him up to the reality of the situation at hand. They then receive their first mission and get the initial time limit of 60 minutes.
After starting to hyperventilate, Shiki attempts to calm Neku down by giving him some of the extra pins she had in her pocket. In a fit of rage, Neku activates the Pyrokinesis pin and sets himself on fire.
After realizing his power and situation, Neku decides to accept his fate and soldier on through the seven days.
The scene then switches to a scene with Beat, Rhyme, Shiki, and Neku heading into RamenDon for lunch. Beat then reveals that they have started to work together and that the "reapers are in for it now." After finding that they can figure out the missions are displayed on Neku's "ancient phone," and having to eat a massive tearjerker ramen special in under 20 minutes. They run outside only to have a bloated Neku try to run off again.
After being grabbed and confronted by Beat, Neku is again chastised about wanting to come back to life and that there is something for him to come back to. They also learn about the division between the UG and the RG after their confrontation is ignored by the massive crowd around them and about the reaper signals near the shops make them visible. A bored Karia and Uzuki appear asking Neku if he still wants to forfeit his right to play the game which Neku promptly refuses.
The scene again moves to a conference between the reaper officers 7 days later, revealing that both Beat and Rhyme have left the game, and Higashizawa is charged with eliminating the final 2. Sho also begins to relentlessly mock Higashizawa for his inability to subtract 582 from 579 (daily player count).
Katanji also promises Higashizawa an officer position following the success of the current game. Sho then storms off saying that he should be made the game master for the next round, predicting that Neku will not be successfully erased by Higashizawa.
Finally, Neku and Shiki reappear, shopping at the Shibu Department Store where Joshua briefly appears to photograph Neku and Sanae Hanekoma promptly exits after telling Neku "He who enjoys life wins at life."
