"The Hour of Reckoning" is the eleventh episode in The World Ends with You: The Animation.
Plot[]
Neku and Beat walk to the entrance of the Shibuya River. Neku thinks about Joshua who spent most of his week to find it, Beat who is aiming to become Composer and believes CAT to be it, and Sanae Hanekoma, CAT himself, who encouraged and helped Neku. He stops Beat and points out light in the distance. They find Sho Minamimoto sitting on a pile of debris, saying they're stuck by a barrier that only Konishi can take down. Beat insults her for hiding in the River, but Minamimoto points out she's been with them the whole time - Konishi reveals herself from Beat's shadow. Minamimoto demands Konishi to remove the barrier, and she relents on the condition he makes her Conductor after he becomes Composer. Konishi explains that a free spirit like Minamimoto will be the best at surviving the chaos. Minamimoto accepts, she takes down the barrier, and Minamimoto declares he'll become the Composer before disappearing.
Konishi stops Neku and Beat and taunts them by bringing Rhyme out of her chest. She takes off her glasses and transforms into Tigris Cantus, creating an illusion where they seem to be floating above Shibuya. They attempt to perform a Fusion but Tigris Cantus breaks their focus. They plan for Beat to act as a decoy and Neku to strike while she's distracted - Neku fires a shot of Flames Afar, Foes Aflame. Tigris Cantus' shadow subdues and beats Neku. Beat looks in horror and remembers Neku's enthusiastic trust and Rhyme's sacrifice, drawing out Rhyme from Tigris Cantus' chest. Beat and Neku perform a fusion, empowering Rhyme, who claws through and breaks her shadow. She bites on and pulls it away from her, then deals a finishing blow.
Neku, Beat, and Rhyme are returned to a white void while Konishi lies on the floor about to be erased. She reveals to Beat that Rhyme's memories and love for Beat was Beat's entry fee, not Rhyme's. Konishi accuses Rhyme of not loving Beat because her entry fee was something else, then she gets erased. Beat falls to the ground, and Shiki Misaki appears from behind and guesses it's her dreams, saying Rhyme didn't know how or what her dreams were when she was a Player. Shiki explains she woke up to see them in the void - Beat realizes she's returned since Neku defeated Konishi and has won his entry fee back. Neku looks at his palm and sees the timer has vanished. Neku explains to a confused Shiki they're still in the Underground and apologizes for her being his entry fee. Shiki is flustered over being Neku's most valued, and he says he wanted Shiki to come back to life, thanking her for his development.
Shiki notices someone in the distance, being Sho Minamimoto pinned to the ground via blue glowing spears of light. The walls around them turn static before shattering to show the Room of Reckoning, Megumi Kitaniji waiting in the distance. He says Beat is too egotistical to face the Composer, who prioritises humanity's happiness. He asks Neku if Shibuya should be reborn to fix its selfishness. He possesses Shiki, who falls to the ground and then rises up, reciting the message most of Red Skull-possessed Shibuya has been saying. Kitaniji transforms into his Noise form Anguis Cantus and directs Shiki to attack Neku and Beat. Beat notices the glow of the Red Skull pin in her pocket. Using a Fusion, Beat summons chains for Neku to restrain the Mr. Mews Shiki is summoning to attack with and make a large ball to attack and defeat Anguis Cantus with. Neku removes the Red Skull from an unconscious Shiki's pocket and places her with an unconscious Beat. Kitaniji grabs Neku's shoulder, and he spots a timer on Kitaniji's hand with minutes left. Kitaniji's negativity begins attracting Noise, which he absorbs, making him sprout dragon heads. Kitaniji explains his belief of Shibuya's negativity stemming from individuality, and by using the Red Skull pins they will believe a single idea. Neku's Player Pin starts glowing and he becomes engulfed in fire, explaining that having to interact with people in the Underground helped him grow and Shibuya should stay as it is. Kitaniji's head starts growing reptilian and he turns gold, fully transformed into Draco Cantus.

Differences from the Game[]
- The Konishi fight is a bit different. In the game, Neku and Beat were fighting Konishi together and both put up a fight, and Neku was able to use Rhyme because he either stole the pin or Konishi accidentally dropped it. In the anime, Neku gets hurt and Beat uses all his power by syncing up with Rhyme (who is still considered his partner) to free her from Konishi's body. It was also raining during the fight in the game and some parts on Neku's background were missing in a glitched-looking way, while the anime simply uses the red sky as a backdrop.
- In the game, after they defeat Konishi, they remain in the sewer, whereas in the anime they get transported to the white void where Neku and other characters typically meet Kitaniji in. In the game, Neku and Beat run into Shiki in the sewer, while in the anime they meet her in the white void.
- In the anime, the white void shatters to reveal itself that it is just the Room of Reckoning. This is true in the game as well as the silhouettes of the buildings can be seen, although there was no shattering moment in the game.
- In the anime, Neku tells Shiki she was taken as his entry fee like he does in the game. However, curiously, Shiki still acts as if she is unaware of this, even though she should have heard Kitaniji mention it, which makes the anime contradict itself as to why Shiki is suddenly unaware she was taken as his entry fee. It is possible Shiki was too focused on her own pain when she was fading away to process what Kitaniji said or she could not hear while fading.
- In the game, the crew stumble across Minamimoto knocked out in the sewer, crushed under a car and a vending machine, where it is unclear if he is going to survive or not. In the anime, they see him in the white void, impaled from behind to the ground by numerous sharp and glowing heavenly blades, briefly conscious before he drops to the ground unmoving and fades away along with the room into oblivion; confirming his death.
- In the game, Neku apparently takes Minamimoto's hat and the humorous description for it appears. This was removed in the anime, likely for seriousness.
- In the game, there is a fight between a possessed Shiki and Kitaniji in the Dead God's Pad, followed by a fight with Kitaniji's Noise form in the Room of Reckoning some time after. This is combined into one fight in the Room of Reckoning in the anime so they never visit the Dead God's Pad, so Neku and Beat have to fight Shiki alongside Kitaniji's noise form. Anime-only viewers may be confused where the Dead God's Pad is, and the game makes it clear it's also in the Shibuya River. It is unknown why the bar does not appear, although it could have made for a poor battle area due to its smaller size and furniture in the way of everyone.
- In the game, Beat attacked Shiki during the fight (in the DS version) while Neku could have as well in the Remix versions. In the anime, Neku warns Beat not to attack Shiki after Beat deflects a Mr. Mew back at her and so they never attack her after this.
- In the game, Beat shielded Neku from the Mr. Mews Shiki summoned and he ended up unconscious. Neku followed it up by taking Shiki's Red Skull pin, making her unconscious. In the anime, Neku uses a psych to collect the Mr. Mews and throws the ball of Mr. Mews back at Kitaniji, defeating him.
- In the game, Shiki is unconscious likely due to being attacked by Neku and Beat and the effects of the O-Pin being removed. In the anime, because she is never attacked by Neku and Beat, it is never really explained why she is unconscious, although it could be because the battle took a lot out of her.
- In the game, with Kitaniji, Shiki and Beat unconscious, Neku had some alone time in the Dead God's Pad. He scanned to enter a mysterious door and was transported to a hallway full of CAT's graffiti, where he reflected on his relationship with his friends and Hanekoma, before entering the Room of Reckoning. He ordered the Composer to come out and show themselves, and then Kitaniji appeared and told Neku the Composer left long ago. Kitaniji then asked Neku to join his side and if he liked people, and the player is allowed to answer both questions with a "yes" and "no" (although choosing "yes" to helping Kitaniji still made Neku want to defend Shibuya). All of this is omitted in the anime because the fight scene occurs at the Room of Reckoning.
- Neku notices a timer on Kitaniji's hand earlier than in the game.
- In the game, Joshua appeared after the initial Kitaniji Noise fight. Kitaniji then fuses with him, Shiki, and Beat, transforming into Draco Cantus. In the anime, Kitaniji attracted regular Noise, due to his negative emotions, and absorbs them, transforming into a three headed dragon Noise. This may have been done to delay the plot twist regarding Joshua.
- In the anime, as Kitaniji's enters his next Noise form, the viewer is shown a rather disturbing body horror scene of Kitaniji's head at the end of a fleshy giant snake body. The game did not have such a frightening transformation.
