"Shiki" (シキ) is the second episode in The World Ends with You: The Animation.

Plot[]

Neku and Shiki begin Day 4 of the Reapers' Game in the green frog carriage at Statue of Hachiko. Beat and Rhyme catch them and sit down to talk and people-watch with them. While Beat and Rhyme are weirded out by their invisibility and scanning, Neku feels that not having to deal with people is liberating and that scanning is more convenient than talking to them. Shiki disagrees with him, saying it's a sad outlook and that she thinks it's better if people talk to each other.

Episode 2-2

The group meeting up.

Rhyme plays with Shiki's toy cat Mr. Mew, making Shiki open up about her seamstress skills and dreams to be a designer. Rhyme states she doesn't have a dream: Neku says it means she doesn't have a dream and fights with Beat again who is encouraging Rhyme to find hers as he dreams to be the greatest skateboarder. Shiki points out Rhyme's rare bell pendant. Rhyme says her older brother got her it and starts praising him, as Beat looks off into the distance.

Since they haven't received the mission yet, Shiki takes Neku to 104 Building. While window-shopping, she calls Neku by the name "Eri", her friend who helped her design the clothes she sewed and wears. A large commotion gathers around celebrity Eiji Oji advertising mineral water; Shiki speaks about how he influences Shibuya (such as advertising Rhyme's bell pendant) and herself. Neku is confused. They get the day's Mission Mail to free Spain Hill from the Noise.

Spain Hill is full of Noise that doesn't stop coming. Shiki realizes the Noise are feeding off the negativity of two girls feuding over an unspoken problem, Ai and Mina. Shiki scans them and learns Ai is angry at Mina because she spotted her hanging out with Makoto and Mina was planning a surprise that backfired. Shiki uses her Player Pin to Imprint into Ai and Mina's minds to talk to each other and work it out. Mina gives Ai tickets to a 777 concert - Mina and Makoto met up to plan the tickets as a birthday surprise. They make up and Neku and Shiki can erase the last noise left of Spain Hill. Shiki abruptly stops talking about friends to Neku and rushes him out, but a girl almost identical to Shiki passes through her. Shiki tears up and says she's Eri in the UG as the day ends.

Neku and Shiki wake up in the Scramble Crossing on Day 5. Before Neku can talk to Shiki, he receives the day's Mission Mail to dominate the Scramble Crossing's view at 3:00, in 3 hours. He sees Makoto nervous about his assignment to get people to watch an ad airing at the Scramble's Q-Front at 3:00 and thinks it to be the mission. Shiki opens up about how the girl from yesterday was Eri and how she wished to be her. Neku tells her the point of her clothes was to cheer people up, and tells her to come along and do the mission.

Neku strategizes to use Eiji Oji to distribute the pins. Shiki scans a RG person drinking the mineral water advertised the day before and finds there's a Prince event happening later at AMX. At the backstage of this event, Makoto's colleague gives a large box of Red Skull pins to Eiji Oji. At Center St. Entrance, a pin Shiki had but Neku didn't clears a Wall. The Reaper tells them to "take care of that pin" and flies off. On comparison, Shiki learns its the Keypin 777 gave her, and Neku has two Player Pins. Neku says he doesn't even know why he's in the Reaper's Game. Shiki awkwardly changes the subject. They arrive at the AMX event. Neku uses Imprinting to make the Prince ask the audience to start the trend of wearing Red Skull pins, and to all look at the 3:00 advertisement.

At 3:00, the Players gathered around the Scramble see the crowds' eyes glow red and dark smoke drifting up and turning the sky purple. A Noise Symbol blasts purple beams of light, Erasing large amounts of Players. When Neku and Shiki think they're doomed to be Erased by the beam, a mysterious figure (shown to be Joshua: his hair is in the frame) snaps his fingers and clears the sky. Shiki apologizes to Neku for not doing much for the day, but Neku says he thinks she's doing just fine. He says they've only survived because Shiki doesn't abandon people, like clearing Futoshi's noise and resolving Ai and Mina's problems. Neku continues that Shiki didn't abandon him after he tried to Erase her, and he's grateful.

Shiki and Eri

Shiki reveals she has Eri's appearance.

Eri and her friend walk through the Scramble. Shiki tries to avoid her, but when she hears Eri is thinking about giving up designing, she stops to listen. Neku tells she can scan her, but Shiki refuses to do it, terrified by learning what Eri truly thinks of her. Eri continues that she can't design clothes without Shiki, who brought her ideas together. She tried to comfort Shiki being insecure about her designing skills by saying she was meant to be a seamstress, not a designer, but she can never apologize for it now. Shiki begins crying and wipes Eri's tears in the UG, resolving to come back to life and follow her and Eri's dreams of making clothes together. Neku is confused by "come back to life". Shiki explains he doesn't remember that the Reapers' Game is to screen Players who want resurrection, and she died in an accident. Her entry fee was her appearance, so she uses Eri's body in the UG rather than what she truly looks like. A shocked Neku has blurry memories of his own death as the day ends.

Differences from the Game[]

  • The day chronology is changed. The anime's Day 4's mission is Day 5 in the game, and the anime's Day 5 mission is Day 6 in the game.
  • In the game, the noise are getting attracted to Ai's negative emotions. In anime, they are getting attracted to both.
  • In the game, Neku and Shiki clear things up with Ai and Mina by imprinting the idea of playing Reaper Creeper, during which Ai reveals why she's angry. In the anime, Shiki just uses imprinting to get the two to talk.
  • In the game, Higashizawa appears to Neku and Shiki after the Day 5 mission, toying with Shiki's emotions and telling Neku he's dead. In the anime, Higashizawa doesn't appear and the encounter that hurts Shiki is seeing Eri. Neku realizes he is dead in the anime's Day 5 after Shiki tells him.
  • Eri wore the same outfit Shiki's UG appearance was wearing in the game. In the anime, Eri wears a different outfit similar to a school uniform.
  • In the game, Day 6's mission involved Imprinting slogans for Makoto to use while giving out Red Skull pins and using the trend mechanic to get the Red Skull pin's brand, Gatito, to number one in several areas. In the anime, the pins are popularized when the Prince gives them out at a public event via Neku's imprinting.
  • In order to get past a wall, Shiki accidentally uses a keypin that 777 gave to her in the previous episode. In the game, this pin was given to Neku and Beat during Week 3.
  • Shiki's comment about Neku having two player pins is moved to the anime's Day 5. In the game, she first points this out in Day 2.
  • After the anime's Day 5 mission is cleared, a Noise symbol appears and Erases many players, which is only stopped by Joshua. In the game's Day 6, this doesn't happen, simply continuing to Shiki listening to Eri's conversation.
  • In the game's Day 6, Eri discusses her plans to quit designing with Mina. In the anime's Day 5, she is walking with an unnamed character.
