Spoiler warning: Plot and/or character details follow.

"Here I go again... At least this time it really ends. ...... (Shiki's out. They made her my entry fee. Joshua, too. Took the bullet for me. Rhyme's gone. Noise got her. And Beat left to join the Reapers. One Player after another...gone. ...... I'm the only one of us left-- the only hope we have."
Neku to himself

Sensible, Senseless is a day in The World Ends with You. For its equivalent in The Animation, see Emergency Call.

Events[]

  • Beat defects from the Reapers to partner with Neku.
  • The Underground goes on Emergency Call, equipping all the Reapers with O-pins.

Plot[]

On the beginning of Neku's third week, he reflects on all of the people he's lost during the Game: Shiki, taken as his entry fee; Joshua, erased trying to protect Neku; Rhyme, erased by the Swing Shark; and Beat, who became a Reaper. His phone buzzes with the mission, to reach 104 in 60 minutes. Neku checks Statue of Hachiko for a partner.
On the rooftops, Uzuki is burnt out from working, even playing games with Kariya. When Uzuki wonders if the game is legal, Kariya describes it as being a loophole in a "gray area juuust short of black". Kariya admits he's never seen three games in a row, and wonders what the Game Master Mitsuki Konishi and the Composer are planning. They decide to get to work while there's still a Player.
At Hachiko, Neku calls out for partners. He can't find anyone when his phone gets a postscript, informing him that the game only has one Player. Neku starts thinking about how to survive 7 days without partner, like running from the Noise, but he realizes if one mission requires erasing Noise, he'd lose. He runs from Frog Noise, but gets surrounded by Noise summoned by Uzuki. She starts counting down until she erases him when Beat interrupts and objects to the Game. He calls Uzuki and Kariya dishonorable for complying with Beat's special op to erase his friends and erasing a defenseless Player. Kariya threatens Beat and tells him he's treading on thin ice - Beat disregards it because Shibuya isn't cold enough for ice, and in the silence makes a pact with Neku, defeating the Noise Uzuki set. When Uzuki summons more Noise at them, Beat escapes with Neku. Kariya tells her to report the incident. As she begins her report, Kariya states "the real party" is starting.
Nekubeat pact

Neku and Beat's pact.

At West Exit Bus Terminal, Beat tells Neku he partnered up because he saw the Game as unfair and as returning the favor of Neku giving him Rhyme's pendant. Beat asks Neku how he's playing the game again, and Neku recounts the end of his second week: after Joshua protected him from Minamimoto's level i flare, Neku was in the Room of Reckoning being congratulated by Kitaniji. He says Joshua and Minamimoto were erased by the attack, and the Game was invalid due to Joshua being an illegal player. Kitaniji explains the partners of living players can be punished with erasure for abetting in their crimes, but as thanks for erasing Minamimoto, Neku will be allowed to play the Game once more. He will be disqualified from any Games after, his Entry Fee of Shiki Misaki will be carried over, and a new entry fee was already taken from Neku. Beat orders Neku to come with him to the Station Underpass, then runs off.
A wall blocks the exit to Station Underpass, but Beat charges into the wall and tears it down. He tries to break the wall to the Shibuya River, but is repelled by the wall. He's confused by how the keypin he has doesn't work and Neku suggests he may have the wrong key. He convinces Beat to give up the Shibuya River and do the mission.
Shibuya river

Beat tries to break down the Shibuya River's barrier.

At the Dead God's Pad, Konishi reports news of Beat's rebellion to Kitaniji. She asks him to handle Beat personally as Game Master, but Kitaniji wants to discuss with the Composer. Konishi asks why they need to consult the Composer when Beat as a Reaper hasn't scored a single point and has been with them for eight days, but Kitaniji reminds her that they punish the crime, not the criminal.
Arriving at the Scramble Crossing, Beat teaches Neku his fusion with a confusing mnemonic Rhyme taught him. They clear the wall and finally reach 104. There, Neku asks Beat if returning the favor was the only reason he had for partnering because he needs to trust his partner. Beat admits he has another reason. When Neku asks, Beat explains he wants to give Shibuya a new Composer - Beat declares it'll be himself. At the Dead God's Pad, Kitaniji relays the Composer's (in reality, Kitaniji's own) decision regarding Beat: strip him of his Reaperhood, equip every Reaper with O-pins, and put the UG on Emergency Call. Konishi is doubtful and believes its overboard, but Kitaniji reassures her it's the Composer's will. Konishi thinks to herself that he's hiding something that she needs to act on immediately, but she needs the hard facts first.
