SHIBUYA is a day in NEO: The World Ends with You.

Synopsis[]

Hazuki Mikagi exorcises Tanzo Kubo from history and offers Rindo Kanade a chance to Replay to save Shibuya and his friends, but at the cost of being responsible for the city's potential destruction. Rindo accepts and gathers every ally he can, including Raimu "Rhyme" Bito and Shiki Misaki, to reverse Shibuya Syndrome and enable the city itself to fight the Noise. With this complete and with the help of the Reapers and even Shiba Miyakaze, the accumulated noise is defeated and the city is saved. Rindo, Fret, Beat, and Nagi are returned to the UG, and Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu returns Shoka and Neku as well. Shiba, realizing that he has been manipulated, leaves with the remaining Shinjuku Reapers to rebuild Shinjuku.

Plot[]

Baffled at appearing in Shibuya, Rindo accidentally bumps into someone in the crossing - revealing that he is in the RG! Looking at his phone, he finds he has a message from his mother, but all sign of Tosai "Fret" Furesawa existing has been lost; no-one remembers him at school, he isn't in Rindo's contacts list anymore, and there's no dialog with him; there is no sign of any of the other Twisters, either.

As Rindo lies collapsed beside the Hachiko Statue realising that he may have saved the city at the cost of all his friends, he is approached by Hazuki Mikagi who asks him to show him around Shibuya. As he does, he asks Rindo about himself and what he thinks is so great about the city. He then surprises Rindo by apologizing for Tanzo Kubo; stating that he summoned him to "cleanse" Shinjuku, but he went too far in trying to eliminate Shibuya too, and that he has "exorcised" him. He points out that Rindo can't say what's so great about Shibuya, yet still he fought hard to save it, and shows him that his Pin is now intact. He can Replay a final time to try to save the city and his friends with Kubo not present, but he will still have to fight the accumulated Noise; or he can destroy the pin and stay in the RG as it is. Rindo decides that he will try again, and Hazuki points out that this means it is his choice to expose the city to the risk of erasure, and his responsibility to protect it.

Returning to the previous day, Rindo tells the others that they previously saved the city but some of them were erased, and they have another try, and tells them that Kubo is the real villain - only to be surprised that none of them have heard that name. It seems that exorcism has removed Kubo entirely from the timeline. Remembering that Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito mentioned that he could communicate with his sister Raimu "Rhyme" Bito due to hacking, he realizes that Rhyme must have hacked the RNS. Since Kaie Ono programmed the RNS, it means that the person with "power of a non-supernatural sort" that he is waiting for is Rhyme. Beat admits he was aware that Rhyme had been invented to "meet the developer" of a system but he had advised her against it. Rindo tells him to allow her to do so, and asks Uzuki Yashiro to escort Rhyme to meet Kaie in Dogenzaka. When he meets with them, they explain that there is a build up of something resembling "corrupted data" in the city which has signatures similar to those of the Reapers themselves; Rindo explains that this is generated from the abandoned timelines, and they agree to look into a way to deal with it.

In his conversation with Hishima Sakazuki, Rindo asks Hishima (who also no longer remember Kubo) if he can convince Shiba to help fight the Noise too. Hishima suggest that Tsugumi Matsunae could do this. Neku explains that Coco Atarashi was planning to help Tsugumi by meeting Shiki Misaki to repair the Mr. Mew doll, but since Uzuki Yashiro is now escorting Rhyme, Koki Kariya alone is having trouble against the noise building up around WildKat. The Twisters go to help against the noise themselves when unexpectedly Sho Minamimoto arrives and helps defeat them. Neku asks for Sho's help, pointing out that he knows Sho wishes to be Composer of the city, which he can't do if it's erased. He says that the "trash" created by time travelling could be reduced by "replacing the lost Souls with the living Souls of Shibuya", but that this is impossible as long as the city is "inoperative". Hishima agrees to meet up with Tsugumi and talk to Shiba.

Meanwhile, Rindo returns to Dogenzaka to tell Rhyme about what Sho said. She suggest that what Kaie calls "corrupted data" are lost Souls, and that to recover the living souls of the city Shibuya Syndrome must be cured, and she and Kaie have come up with a way to do that, which they name "Operation Awakening." Neku will use Sync to connect to the minds of everyone in the city; Tsugumi Matsunae will share positive visions with them; Nagi Usui will Dive to open their minds; and finally Tosai "Fret" Furesawa will Remind them of joy connected to the city.

Finally, Rindo returns to the meeting with Shiba Miyakaze at the Scramble Crossing. Shiba has also forgotten Kubo, but remembers him once his name is mentioned. He tells Shiba that he has been manipulated, and even though Kubo is no longer here, he still manipulated Shiba into erasing Shinjuku and had him alter the rules of the game to cause chaos. Shiba points out that he still wants to erase Shibuya, and Rindo replies that Shiba will be erased as well. Hishima and Tsugumi say that Shiba has been a different person since he was given his powers, and that they only stopped caring about him because they could no longer stand the monster he had become. Tsugumi Matsunae shows him a vision of the previous timeline. Rindo agrees that if it is really necessary they can still fight after the Noise is dealt with, and Shiba agrees to help fight the Noise by summoning more powerful Plague Noise to attack it.

Neku and the others gather on top of 104 to perform Operation Awakening while the Shinjuku Reapers and Shibuya Reapers fight the remaining Noise below. They are unexpectedly joined by Shiki Misaki and by Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu. When Joshua sees Neku attempting to Sync with the entire city, he comments that he's impressed and calls Neku his partner. As before, Rindo's pin releases the wave of noise, but the souls of the citizens fly into the air, fighting back against it. The remaining noise coalescedsinto a single huge bird noise, which the Twisters fight.

After defeating the bird, Shibuya is restored to normal. Shiba Miyakaze admits that he no longer has the energy or spirit to fight, and declares the game a draw, a circumstance he did not consider in the rules; but states that Rindo and the others can return to the RG by getting rid of their Player Pins. He also states that Shoka Sakurane can rejoin the Reapers if she wants to - as under Shinjuku's rules, a departing Reaper is erased at the end of the game. Rindo is shocked to learn that Shoka must have known this when she joined the team, and even more when Shoka announces that she intends to be erased, as she does not want to play the Reaper's Game forever and has "made her peace". Rindo points out that he knows that she is Swallow, and she responds that she'd just be unable to contact him as a Reaper so there's no point staying for that. Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu intervenes, suggesting a further game, and Shoka vanishes; Joshua says he put her "back on the street with the other stray cats" and the game will be for Rindo to find her.

The Shibuya Reapers recover from the battle, and argue with Sho Minamimoto about him helping them before he leaves. Coco Atarashi, annoyed, points out that she brought Sho back to life and so should be his master, and intends to track him down and make him obey her. Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu talks with Neku Sakuraba about their partnership, and admits that he "locked him up" in Shinjuku after Coco shot him to protect him and stop him revealing Joshua's secrets. Neku asks to return to the RG, and while Joshua says he had hoped Neku would stay in the UG and potentially eventually become Composer, he agrees to return him to the RG, where he meets up with Shiki Misaki. Shiba Miyakaze states that he hates having been manipulated, and decides that he will return to Shinjuku and attempt to rebuild it; the remaining Shinjuku Reapers, seeing that his attitude has changed, agree to go with him to help.

Rindo Kanade and Tosai "Fret" Furesawa return to the RG in Shibuya, where Rindo is playing FantasyGO in the Scramble Crossing when he unexpectedly bumps into Shoka Sakurane. Joshua may have sent her away, but he also sent her back into the RG. She is still uncomfortable being in the RG and isn't used to bumping into people. Rindo and Shoka shake hands and become friends.
