"Rhyme and Beat" is the ninth episode in The World Ends with You: The Animation.

Plot[]

Neku and Beat open the doors of the Concert Stage after hearing 777 scream. Beat guesses 777 left, but Neku notices his choker on the floor and that he got erased.

Neku wakes up in Miyashita Park Underpass - he wonders where Beat went to, and finds him staring at a bouquet of flowers. Neku asks if there was an accident, and Beat reveals his and Rhyme's death: Beat ran out of the house at night after an altercation with his father and Rhyme came after him, asking him to talk it out. Beat brushed her off. A car lost control and swerved towards Rhyme - Beat ran up and tried to push her out of the way, killing them both. Beat blames himself and reveals Rhyme is his sister. When they came to the Underground, Rhyme forgot Beat being her brother. He made a Pact with her to keep her safe, but she was erased again trying to save Beat. Neku says Rhyme didn't have ill will towards Beat, and says it means she must have really cared about him if her memories of Beat were her entry fee. Neku calls him an idiot for his bravery, and trusts him for risking his life to save Neku. They get determined to bring back Rhyme and Shiki.

Beat walks out of the underpass, but Neku grabs him and tells him to blend in as Reapers using their keypins. Beat gets an idea to scan the Reapers, but Neku points out that Reapers can't be scanned, only people in the Realground. Neku tries to scan one, but doesn't get a thought. Neku describes it as being "empty". Beat points out they're all wearing the Red Skull pins, which are CAT-designed and with the same design as the Player Pins, which prevent the wielder from being scanned. He concludes that CAT had to have designed the Player Pins - Neku remembers Joshua telling him that Player Pins are designed and controlled by the Composer. Neku concludes CAT couldn't be the Composer if Hanekoma, CAT, was helping Joshua look for the Composer. They go look for Konishi.

At Mexican Dog, Uzuki is despondent. Kariya doubts the special job she's doing for Konishi, making Uzuki snap back about the promotion she wants. Kariya tells her the higher-ups are a boring job.

At Tipsy Tose Hall, Neku and Beat see a crowd yelling down a sold-out Red Skull supplier. Noise are feeding off their Negative Emotions - Beat notices Eri waiting in the crowd. They defeat the Noise, making the crowd calm down and disperse. Uzuki reprimands them for distracting themselves by fighting Noise, and shows them noise Rhyme, trapped in a birdcage.

Beat is woken up by the mission mail on Day 4, to find and defeat Kariya and Uzuki. Beat takes Neku to their turf, where the Reapers lurk and watch Players - the Scramble Crossing's Q-Front building. The cars and pedestrians stop, and they fight. While Neku and Beat are attacking Uzuki, Kariya comes in from behind and hits Neku with a blast of fire. When Uzuki tries to take out Beat with a powerful gunshot from behind, Neku blocks it with Piercing Pillar. Neku and Beat attack with a Fusion and demand Rhyme back. Kariya surrenders, and returns Rhyme, who flies into his arms and immediately dissipates. Beat thinks its a trick, but Kariya realizes they were tricked by Konishi. Uzuki bemoans how disposable lower-ranking Reapers are treated. As an apology, Kariya gives Beat an officer's keypin. Beat warns them about Konishi, Uzuki and Kariya leave, and the pedestrians start walking again.

Walking back, Uzuki asks Kariya why they'd give the rebels a keypin. Kariya stops and asks her if she feels the city becoming homogenous. He says they're slowly converging to a single point and hopes it isn't a period. Uzuki doubles over in pain, and when Kariya comes to her side, he does too. Konishi comes out of the shadows, and notices the O-Pins' side effects are beginning to show. She wonders about Kitaniji's actions, and then disappears. Kariya cries out in pain - then, Uzuki and Kariya stand up, eyes glowing red.

Hanekoma looks at the Taboo refinery sigil at Udagawa Back Streets and fixes the fundamentals. A Taboo Sho Minamimoto rises out, roars, and flies away.

Differences from the Game[]

  • In the game, day three is spent dedicated to chasing down Uzuki in a game of tag, as she was made substitute Game Master for the day by Konishi. In the anime, this does not occur and it's mainly Neku and Beat exploring the city looking for Konishi.
  • In the game, Neku and Beat begin day three at Scramble Crossing, while they begin it at Miyashita Park underpass in the anime for no apparent reason, possibly Konishi taunting Beat as she may know where he died.
  • Day 3 in the anime essentially adapts Day 4 of the game, in which Beat tells Neku how he and Rhyme died.
  • In the game, it is implied that Beat and Rhyme were killed during daytime, with Beat mentioning he and his parents fought in the morning and the scene in the game is bright. In the anime, Beat and Rhyme died during the night.
  • The anime does not explain why Beat fought with his parents. In the game, it is mentioned it was often over Beat's school grades, and they would berate him and compare him to Rhyme.
  • Eri is seen trying to buy red skull pins, which was not shown in the game.
  • Noise Rhyme is trapped in a birdcage in the anime, while she converted into a pin in the game prior.
  • Day 4 in the game is spent doing a puzzle created by Kariya in order to escape the Underpass. In the anime, Neku and Beat simply leave to fight Uzuki and Kariya.
  • In the game, Kariya and Uzuki are fought at Towa Records, while they are fought at Scramble Crossing in the anime.
  • Konishi is seen watching Kariya and Uzuki get possessed by their O-Pins which was not in the game. Additionally, Konishi is seen having the supernatural ability to appear out of shadows a whole 3 days earlier, which the game tried to use a plot twist on day 7.
