Quests are offered by shop owners. Quests are completed by trading to the shop owner the required Pins or Items. Quest rewards are items, some of which are not available from anywhere else. To access quest items, it is often necessary to raise a shop owner's friendship level by buying items from their shop. Note that buying Quest items does not contribute towards a shop owner's friendship gauge, as that is determined by the amount of money spent at their shop. Most quest items can be made as many times as the player likes provided they have the materials, with such items being so indicated by a blue border or blue text on the items icon, depending on the version. Items that are available for quest trading only once, which includes all stickers, books, and Gatito brand threads, are instead marked by either a red border or yellow text.
NOTE: Data is sourced from US/EU versions of The World Ends with You. Many item stats changed compared to the Japanese version.
Quest Pins[]
Unlike items, Pins obtained via quest purchases are never purchasable with money, though a large number of them are obtainable through enemy drops and special events. Most quest pins can be traded for in exchange for at least one type of material pin, though the patterns for doing so are notably quite varied depending on the type of pin. Quest pins are never unique and can always be completed multiple times.
Branded pins, for the most part, usually require some combination of material pins, with only Ohabari demanding mastered psych pins in addition. The Gatito brand pins also stand out with unique quest requirements.
The two Tin Pin pins both ask for a mastered Tin Pin pin as part of their quest along with material pins. Notably, the mastered pin is specifically mentioned in the descriptions as having been modified to produce the pin obtained.
Yen pins only ever ask for multiples of a single type of material pin. Other than 10,000 Yen, all yen pins obtained from a quest will be unmastered. Notably, 10,000 Yen can be traded for using most types of material pins, offering a convenient way of converting these pins to currency. By comparison, 1 and 10 only take Rare Metal, 5 takes Tektite (another way that it is made to be rarer than most others), while 5,000 can be obtained from either.
Quests for material pins, exempting Scarletite, always are in exchange for the next lower class of material pin. Interestingly, only those pins with an odd number of gems depicted can be traded for, and Scarletite requires that these same pins be traded for its own quest.
For the remaining pins, Rhyme is standalone as expected, the Lucky pins each add more Dark Matter as they increase in value but are otherwise the same, and the Japan themed pins (which replaced 4 pins of different names and design from the Japanese version) all cost the same for their quests.
Thread Quest items[]
All branded threads that are quest exclusive items are traded for by offering one type of material pin, one type material swag, and one thread item. For all brands other than Gatito, the thread traded will belong to the same brand as the one it is being exchanged for, and in most cases will a similar "type" of clothing item. Gatito brand items by comparison always require a thread item from another brand, and often one that is itself a Quest item, a trait that, outside of the Gatito brand, is only seen on the item Cat Deck, which is arguably a Gatito-Wild Boar collaboration item, and on the Patchy Biker Jacket. Further, all Gatito thread quests are one-time exchanges
Certain expensive threads available for money are also available as quest items, usually in exchange for material items and Yen pins. The Liberty Duke is a notable exception, using a purchased thread item with just a single pin (though admittedly one said to be made of Gold, so one could argue that the pin is also a "material"), while also being available for cash.
Unbranded threads are received in exchange for 3 types of mastered pins. Among these, the Samurai set, containing some of the best threads that all provide a massive boost to a single stat, notably uses one of the three Lucky pins, a Noise pin from one of the Cantus bosses, and a Noise pin that a Noise boss drops (Mink is dropped by the Taboo family member as well as the boss). The Maid Outfit, arguably a more well-rounded version compared to the Samurai items, notably stands out in this groups as the only one to use a branded psych pin, though one that is only obtained from the game's superboss. The rest use a combination of Tin Pin pins, Reaper-themed pins, the one remaining Cantus boss pin, and/or Shadow Matter. Outside of Shadow Matter, none of these pins are required for more than one quest.

Food Quest Items[]
Food items obtained through quests generally can be divided into two main categories, namely those involving ingredients, and those that don't, and all of which are repeatable. Most of the latter category are also available for a considerable amount of money (Insta-noodles being the lone exception), and their quests involve trading Yen pins, sometimes with material pins as well. These foods can be sorted into three main patterns: pharmaceuticals, which are obtained in exchange for Tektite and 50 Yen pins, herbal remedies, which are exchanged for 10,000 Yen pins, and the aforementioned Insta-noodles, which asks for a single 100 Yen pin (which combined with the nature of the item itself gives the impression that this is something bought from a vending machine rather than something the store itself prepared).
By comparison, many of the best stat-boosting food items belong to the former category, in which one must trade material pins plus two types of ingredient items. As expected, the ingredients generally align with the type of food being traded for. The material pins by comparison seem to align more with the point in the story that one may typically expect to gain access to the food in question, rather than its value.
Gourmet Rice Ball was made a quest item in Final Remix, and falls into its own category.

Swag Quest Items[]
Swag items cover a number of different types of items. Unsurprisingly, quests function differently depending on the specific items.
Materials and Ingredients[]
In the case of crafting material items and food ingredients, all items can be purchased both with money as well as obtained through quests, with all materials being purchasable at Shibu-Q Heads and all ingredients being found at either the Herbal Remedies Store or the Pharmacy. The quests for the 8 materials are evenly divided across 4 stores (Mus Rattus II, Mus Rattus IV, D+B 104, and Wild Boar 104). All materials are also obtainable through event rewards, though only 4 ingredients (Extra Fine Noodles, Choice Meat, Crimson Chili, and Sweet Sweet Onions) can be obtained in this manner. All materials have the same quest requirements as do all ingredients, each combining 10 Rare Metals with either a 10 Yen pin for materials or 5 Yen pin for ingredients (meaning that ingredient quests are less accessible early in the game). These quests are all repeatable.

While most CDs are purchased for the same flat price, a handful are traded for as quests, with all being exchanged for a large number of Rare Metal pins. The original game featured one for each of the 3 main music stores, each a version of Twister (the only Twister variation not to be a quest in the DS version was Gang-Mix, which was not in the Japanese version). Solo Remix added Runaway as its sole new quest CD, while Final Remix added quests for the nine CDs sold by Coco Atarashi in Solo Remix plus the two new tracks for A New Day.

Stickers are always one-time quests (though some stickers have multiple one-time quests spread across different shops) and usually require Scarletite, often with additional pins, with (S) Ultimate being one of the few not to use Scarletite, likely due to the difficulty of obtaining the material pin without access to Ultimate difficulty. The other exceptions, Tin Pin Versus, is also notable for having a different quest in the original Japanese game.

Books[]
Books are all one-time quests, each of which calls for a single Yen pin, with 100 and 500 being the most common. Most red and blue books as well as all green books and a single yellow book, are obtained automatically in story, while nearly every book not obtained during the story is a Quest purchase. Black books contain the only exceptions, with books obtained by completing optional events.
