Negative Noise

Negative Noise are a form of Noise. They show up as a yellow Noise symbol when scanned. They are generally made up of the same species as Chump Noise, but they possess people and objects in the Realground feeding off the imagination of those individuals. The Imagination consumed by Negative Noise in this manner is destroyed. This causes the individuals possessed by Negative Noise to be flooded with negative emotions. These negative emotions also have the side effect of attracting Chump Noise to the area. Erasing such Noise is known to cause a euphoric response in the people being possessed.

There are also cases of Negative Noise simply hovering in place, where they function as part of an obstacle or puzzle, but these are rare cases and appear to be the deliberate acts of Reapers, implying that they can somehow restrain Noise as Negative Noise.

Negative Noise possessing an object, like with the Moyai sculpture on day 2 of Shiki's week, will typically float in place. Those possessing people though will move around erratically near the person they possess as a red colored Scan bubble appears over the person. The bubble features no readable text, instead showing a chaotic cluster of lines, likely to indicate that the person's thoughts are being affected. Tapping the bubble will reveal a thought fragment showing how depressed the Noise are making them.

Many missions in the Reapers' Game involve the discovery and erasure of Negative Noise, either as a means of clearing a wall or to affect the people in ways that advances the objective. Further, Negative Noise cannot be chained with other types of Noise. In-universe, this might suggest that Negative Noise differ in nature slightly from their Chump Noise cousins, possibly due to their interactions with the Realground.
