The World Ends With You

"A robotic girl of few words who allies herself with the Ruinbringers. Her actions on the battlefield mirror her personality, and can be predicted fairly easily if you study her close enough."
— Noise Report

Grus Cantus is a boss of Week 2 and Tsugumi Matsunae's Noise form in NEO: The World Ends with You.

Abilities[]

Grus Cantus' repertoire centers largely around lasers which she can fire from any position. Arguably the most annoying attack to deal with involves covering the battlefield in lasers that array themselves widthwise, lengthwise, or in a grid. At two points during the fight, she will create a doppelgänger which cannot be damaged but which will supplement Grus Cantus' laser attacks with lasers of its own. Her ultimate attack, which can be used once or twice depending on the difficulty and on how quickly you deplete her health, involves summoning a massive wall of doppelgängers to rain fireballs down on the battlefield. Additionally, she will periodically send out an orb to entrap one of your party members—if this party member is not freed by attacking the orb until it breaks, Grus Cantus will assault them with numerous converging lasers, dealing heavy damage.

She will occasionally cover the battlefield in darkness, which will disable targeting until you approach her position.

Strategy[]

The most important thing to keep in mind for the Grus Cantus fight is simply to keep moving. Because so many of her attacks track your position, performing well-timed dodges will give you plenty of openings (while the attacks resolve) during which to punish her. While it may be tempting to wait out the floor lasers in a safe spot between them, this is not advisable; doing so will leave you a sitting duck for her to assail with subsequent attacks.

When she entraps a party member with her orb, your first priority should absolutely be to free them ASAP with focused attacks. This is important not only to avoid suffering heavy damage—even if the party member is freed, Grus Cantus will follow through with the full converging laser attack, giving you a massive window to freely attack her without fear of repercussion.

When she covers the battlefield in darkness, your first priority should be to locate her with the camera and move to her position ASAP so as to be able to target and attack her. This is doubly important when a doppelgänger is present, as you will be enduring attacks from two fronts while unable to fight back. Otherwise, though, the doppelgänger is largely a nonissue—its attacks are less frequent than those of Grus Cantus and can be easily dodged should you remember to keep moving.

Finally, when she uses her ultimate attack, she will summon an additional doppelgänger afterwards before returning to the field. This presents an additional danger, as you will now have to avoid attacks from three fronts while simultaneously dodging the rain of fireballs. Simply keep moving and only attack in short bursts.

An incredibly effective tactic at any difficulty is to stagger-lock Grus Cantus, which will result in her being repeatedly knocked down and giving you huge openings to attack. This can be accomplished with any high-damage single-hit psych (or, ideally, successive use of multiple such psychs), such as Psychic Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, or Massive Hit. Landing these in quick succession will almost guarantee a knockdown, and with enough knockdowns, you can offset the timing of her scripted attacks (the doppelgänger summoning and the rain of fireballs) relative to the health thresholds at which they "should" trigger. This can have the amusing effect of causing dialogue for one attack to play during another attack.

Trivia[]

  • Grus is Latin for Crane.
  • There is a construction "crane" in the area as a play on words, due to Grus Cantus being based on a crane.[1]
  • Grus Cantus specifically has the appearance of a red-crowned crane. This ties into it's hanafuda origin, as that species of crane is often depicted on the 1st month or January card (when Tsugumi has her birthday). Additionally, the "crowned" part of Grus Cantus' origin may have something to do with the tiara on it's Noise symbol, and be a nod to the fact that Tsugumi wears headphones.
