A Game Master (ゲームマスター Gēmumasutā), often abbreviated to GM, is an officer-rank Reaper selected by the Conductor[1] to oversee that week's Reapers' Game. While the rank of Game Master doesn't affect a Reaper's power, it grants more privileges than a Reaper who is not Game Master has.
Duties[]
The Game Master's main purpose is to assign the missions for that week, which usually last for a few hours, and enough for one each day of the Game. These missions can last for more than one day if the Game Master so desires, such as Mitsuki Konishi's mission to find her that lasted for six days of The World Ends with You's third week, or Shiba Miyakaze's mission to defeat him that lasted for the entire third week of NEO: The World Ends with You. While a Game Master can choose to shirk their duties and not assign any missions without receiving any penalties, this is both frowned upon by the Conductor and can be deadly for the Game Master. Only one Game Master has been known to do this, and that is Sho Minamimoto, who was creating Taboo Noise refinery sigils, and even then planned to be "reborn" using the sigils. The more Players left to combat the Game Master, the lower the chances of them surviving. This is because the final mission on Day 7 is usually to defeat the current Game Master.
Abilities[]
- Can assign one mission per day during the Reapers' Game.
- Higher authority over all Harrier and Support Reapers.
- Can assign a substitute Game Master to take their place.[2]
Achieving the Position[]
The only way to become a Game Master is to be chosen by the Conductor. The Game Master isn't really a "rank", but rather a temporary title and privilege, since one is only Game Master for a period of seven days unless the Conductor sees it fit that they reprise their role. There seems to be no cap on how many weeks a Reaper can be Game Master: Shiba Miyakaze was Game Master for 106 weeks[3] and had been GM for every week of it but could not be stopped due to being the Conductor who chooses the Game Master himself[1].

Rindo: Is that how they choose who gets to be Game Master? With points?
Shoka: No, that's a whole different thing. Okay, so, the top Reaper is called the "Conductor." That's Shiba right now. And the Conductor chooses the Game Master. ...Which is also Shiba right now. Has been for quite a while.
Rindo: Guess he's not happy unless he's at the center of everything, huh?
Shoka: You can say that again.
Rindo: But seriously, is he allowed to do that?
