Overview |
- "We have just as much right to be here as anyone else! And we will fight for that right using the powers given to us, and return to the headwaters of the UG!"
Fuya Kawahara (河原 封也 Kawahara Fuuya) is a Player in NEO: The World Ends with You, and the leader of the Deep Rivers Society.
Appearance[]
Fuya is a thin man with slightly disheveled black hair and he wears thick black rimmed glasses. He wears a grey argyle jacket, a light pink undershirt, blue jeans and dark grey shoes.
Personality[]
- "You can row, row, row all you want... but you won't go gently down this stream!"
Despite being the leader of his team, Fuya is quite cowardly and not one to normally take charge. However, his aversion to conflict is the reason he and the rest of the Deep Rivers Society managed to avoid dropping out of the game so far, so his "flight-over-fight" approach has served them surprisingly well. He holds a store-bought map of the city in which he’s hand-marked his favorite culverts.[2]He talks in river-related puns.
Story[]
Background[]
Fuya once inspired Jun Sonobe's lifestyle to change from staying indoors to exploring the outside.
It is unclear how Fuya died, although it is said he "got sucked into the action while taking a stroll in search of Shibuya’s most exquisite culverts"[2]. It is implied he, along with Motoi Anazawa and Kanon Tachibana, have been playing the Reapers' Game for at least seven months with at least 30 loops[3]. At some point, Fuya became the leader of the Deep Rivers Society.
NEO: The World Ends with You[]
On Day 5, the Wicked Twisters meet Fuya at the top of the Spain Hill stairs. He refuses to give up on the mission and attempts to overwhelm the team with other members of the Deep Rivers Society, in order to prevent them from going after the gold pig. Rindo Kanade uses Replay to change the past so the Deep Rivers Society's numbers are thinned. After a boss fight with Fuya, he surrenders while crying in the process, lamenting his hard work went down the drain. Nagi Usui posits there may be another factor contributing to Fuya's "excessive show of grief", while Rindo is taken aback by Fuya's reaction, as if his life was on the line. Fuya then flees with another member of his team. Rindo wonders what Fuya meant by "erasure".
On Day 7, the Deep Rivers Society is in last place, so in a desperate last-ditch effort, the team attempts to go after the Ruinbringers for their points. Fuya's team tries to defeat Susukichi but loses. Afterwards, Shiba Miyakaze proceeds to erase Fuya due to their team being in last place.
On Week 3, Day 5, remnants and lingering memories of Fuya's soul in the UG take the form of a Noise created by Shiba, although as Nagi notes, it is an empty husk with no soul. The Wicked Twisters defeat it as part of their mission.
Abilities[]
Although a coward that relies on thinking ahead in order to outsmart his enemies, Fuya does possess some fighting capabilities with psychs. He is able to levitate in the air with his teammates and fire energy bullets from his hands. More often then not, he will run away and plant mines behind him to explode if his opponents try to chase him down. Fuya can also summon forth entire rows of golden mines to litter the battlefield, leaving only a small sliver of room in a random spot for the Wicked Twisters to take cover in before all the explosives detonate simultaneously.
Etymology[]
Kawahara (河原) means "beach". Fuya (封也) is made up of two classical kanji: first one for "closing" and one for "to be". His name can be interpreted as "to be a beach" and a reference to him being the leader of a team obsessed with bodies of water.
Quotes[]
- "I am the one and only Fuya Kawahara, team leader and culvert connoisseur."
- "I know exactly what you kids were thinking. You took one look at me and said, "This guy's just a whishy-washy pushover." I'm right, aren't I?"
- "Well, look who's up the creek without a paddle now. How the tides have turned!"
- "You can row, row, row all you want... but you won't go gently down this stream!"
- "Well, look who's washed ashore: a pack of pig poachers."
- "I must say, I didn't expect you to diverge from the mainstream like that. But we erected a formidable dam just in case you floated along into our tributary. The Deep Rivers Society!"
- "You would ask us to retreat before we claim our rightful reward?"
- " I appreciate the advice. But my comrades and I didn't make it this far by simply going with the flow. It's been an upstream swim, but we made it here through sheer grit and determination. And while our intel suggests your friend here is indeed quite formidable, that's precisely why we put preparations in place—so as not to get swept away."
- "A little flotsam won't stop us. If anything, it's given us a positional advantage!"
- "We will not allow ourselves to drift away when the going gets tough. If we merely float along wherever the river of life takes us, then we deserve to be trounced by the torrents of the downstream waters! We have just as much right to be here as anyone else! And we will fight for that right using the powers given to us, and return to the headwaters of the UG!"
- "Rejoice, comrades: the golden swine is all but ours! Wahahaha!"
- "...N-no. I will not be cowed into submission by you thugs!"
- "We have just as much right to b-be here as anyone else!"
- "Y-you may think you've outsmarted me... b-but the quiet waters run deep! Watch out for the undertow!"
- "I- I... I-I... I s-s-sur- Sssur-rrr... I surrender. I SURRENDE-HE-HEEERRR!"
- "W-We worked so h-h-hard to stake our claim, and all that work went down the draaaaaaiiiiiiiiin!"
- "Bwaaaaaa-ha-haaaaaa... Waaa-ha-hangh... Bleu-haaangh..." (crying)
- "This isn't over... The current within me still rages!"
- "I can't get erased... Anything but that!"
Battle quotes[]
- "Open the flood gates!"
- "After us, the flood!"
- "Here's a little trick I've been hiding up my stream... I'm pulling out all the stops now!"
- "Don't let them overflow us!"
Trivia[]
- At 27 years old, Fuya is the oldest known player in the series of the players with known ages.
- His birthday is Pi Day, a possible reference to his calculating personality.
- Fuya has the same surname as Rieko Kawahara, down to the exact Japanese characters. Due to Rieko's Social Network stating the fact she was married, it is possible that she and Fuya were in a relationship prior to Fuya entering the Reapers' Game. If Fuya and Rieko were married, then she mainly married him for his money.[4]
