The World Ends With You
Speech Bubble - Exclamation Question SR Spoiler warning: Plot and/or character details follow.
"The Composer did not impose the entry upon Players to cause them anguish. In experiencing life without the thing one most values, Players are forced to reexamine just how crucial those things really are. The hope is that by the close of the Game, Players will be able to take a hard look at themselves, and be able to take on the future with a new outlook on life. The entry fee exists to force Players to see the truth about themselves. It is a test posed by the Composer to spur Player's self-enlightenment."
— Secret Report 17, The World Ends with You

The entry fee of Shibuya's Reapers' Game is taken from each of the Game's Players at the beginning of the Game. The entry fee represents the thing that the Player most values and is only returned if the Player wins the Game. The collection of entry fees serves dual purposes of motivating Players to play and providing the Player with perspective about the necessity of their perceived most valued thing. The Players are not told what their entry fee is, although they can guess and may realize what it is during the Game.

It should be noted that this is only implemented under Joshua's rules for the Shibuya Reapers' Game. In NEO: The World Ends with You, when Shibuya played by Shinjuku's rules, entry fees were not taken from the Players.
