🡒urbaNlegendZ is a day in NEO: The World Ends with You.

Synopsis[]

As the Twisters investigate urban legends around the city, they learn that Shinjuku was erased three years previously and that many of the current Reapers transferred to Shibuya from there. Shoka Sakurane warns them that the Shinjuku Reapers play dirty, and the Twisters are briefly attacked by a bizarre new form of Noise that they cannot harm.

Plot[]

As the day begins, Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito discusses the previous day, mentioning that he would not be surprised if the Reaper's Game was rigged as the previous game he played in also had an ulterior motive, although it was a good one - to save Shibuya.

The Twisters are told that the mission is to "unravel the city's riddles and report on your findings", which involves finding the truth of urban legends within 7 districts of the city and reporting them to a Support Reaper to open the wall to Tipsy Tose Hall. The Twisters use their powers, especially Fret's Remind, to investigate urban legends in each area.

As they do, they have a number of encounters with Reapers and other players:

  • Uzuki Yashiro checks in on the players, and Beat asks her why he is in the UG when he doesn't remember dying, and in fact none of the Twisters do. Uzuki states that if this is true, it may indicate that they never existed in the RG at all, and it's a "royal mess" that only the Composer can deal with. She mentions that most of the Reapers active in the game now are from Shinjuku, a city that was erased three years prior. None of the Twisters remember Shinjuku, as the erasure also deleted memories of the city; with the exception of Beat, who retained his memory because he had access to the UG. Uzuki states that Shinjuku's Reapers have now taken over and that they are notoriously loose with the rules of their version of the Game.
  • Shoka Sakurane asks how they are doing and mentions that they met Uzuki. Beat infers that she is from Shinjuku and asks about the bizarre behavior of the Shinjuku Reapers - apparently dragging living people into the UG, allowing the Ruinbringers to loop the game rather than making them Reapers, and running a Reapers' Game in which the Reapers are not active. Shoka dismisses him, claiming that the previous version of the game he played and was a Reaper in is "prehistoric", and that Shinjuku's Reaper's Game and Reaper culture is heavily based on power and playing dirty, and "taking no prisoners, leaving no survivors". She does explain that the Ruinbringers cannot be made Reapers if they do not choose to be.
  • Motoi Anazawa accidentally learns that the Twisters are considering allying with the Variabeauties against the Ruinbringers, and comments that he would also be prepared to join.
  • As they return to Center Street, the Twisters are attacked by a number of transparent Noise which they are unable to harm. Fortunately, they disappear shortly after the fight begins. Tanzo Kubo is seen noting that this is "according to plan".

When they reach Tipsy Tose Hall, the Twisters find themselves in a race against the Variabeauties to take down a Mammoth Noise. Although the Variabeauties win, the Ruinbringers are still at the top of the game. Fret and Rindo argue about the idea of allying with the Variabeauties when Rindo recieves a message from Swallow on his phone. She tells him that she is, in fact, playing the Reaper's Game and that she knows who he is, but doesn't want to tell him who she is since they may have to fight each other. She does suggest that making allies will help them.

Urban Legends[]

The Urban Legends investigated by the Twisters are as follows:

  • Center Street: a person has disappeared after entering the changing room in a certain store. This is traced to a member of the Variabeauties who is shoplifting clothes from stores accessible to Players by trying them on and then re-entering the UG while in the changing room.
  • Scramble Crossing: for one second a day, the jumbotron shows an image of a place in Shibuya. If you go there and walk in a counter-clockwise circle, you will die in 7 days. In fact, a corrupt Support Reaper is using this method to contact Players and sell them easy Noise encounters for 300,000 yen each to prevent them being seen as slackers on their teams. Some psychics in the RG detected this and the Reaper had to dispose of them to prevent other Reapers learning about the scam by Scanning them.
  • 104 Building (district): If you step on a certain one of the white lines on the 104 crossing, you will have bad luck. A member of the Purehearts waits by the crossing Imprinting passers-by with the desire to end their relationships by text message. He genuinely believes this to be helpful to them, but can be persuaded to stop.
  • Tsutaya O-East: if you throw your garbage in the wrong can, you will be cursed by a red raven and will be involved in a car accident. The can in question is for combustable material only. A raven Noise lairs near the can and if anyone throws a shiny object (which is probably not combustable) in, it possesses them with its desire to gather shiny objects, usually resulting in them running unsafely into the road to pick them up.
  • Shibuya Hikarie: anyone who follows the graffiti arrows painted around the area disappears. The arrows lead to the bus terminal, where a bored Support Reaper is implanting people with the idea to get on random buses, since he has nothing to do with so few teams in the game.
  • Spain Hill: anyone who steps on the 18th step of the Spain Hill stairs goes straight to Hell. The slip guard on the stair is missing, and stepping on the stair is harmless, but a Scorpion Noise stings anyone who slips and falls on the stair. While this cannot harm people in the RG, the interaction with Noise causes a sharp sensation of fear.
  • Cat Street: standing close to a particular telephone pole allows you to hear the dead. This turns out to be a mundane prank using a camera and a directional speaker.

You do not need to investigate all 7 legends in order to pass the barrier, but doing so earns a reward of a trade pin.

Noise[]

Remember what a pain in the backside Houseleon was on Day 1 as a boss? Now it's a Field Noise. Have fun.

Secret Reports[]

Notes[]

  • The seven urban legends of the city marks a trend in Square Enix games. In Kingdom Hearts II, there was a "Seven Wonders of Twilight Town" mission led by Roxas, who bears resemblance to Rindo, and one of them also involved counting stairs. The second time a similar mission occurred was in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, where Zack could investigate the Seven Wonders of Nibelheim.
  • Another use of "exact words" connected to the Ruinbringers: while it might be true that the Ruinbringers can't be made Reapers if they don't choose to be, she tactfully avoids mentioning that they don't choose to be because they already are.
